Sophie Decobecq's Highlands Anejo
Calle 23 began when Sophie Decobecq, a French-born biochemist and engineer who had moved to Mexico in 1999, started her own tequila project in 2003 — taking the name, by the brand's well-told account, from a Calle 23 street sign in old Guadalajara. Her signature discipline is separation: the blanco, reposado and anejo are each distilled on their own run with different yeast combinations, so the anejo is not a barrel decision made after the fact but a spirit built for oak from the start. Highlands agave from the fields between Arandas and Tepatitlan is autoclave-cooked, roller-milled and fermented open-air in stainless steel, then double distilled in a pot still with a copper coil before 16 months in ex-bourbon casks. The brand reports a Double Gold at the 2009 San Francisco World Spirits Competition for this expression. See its siblings on the Calle 23 vendor page and in our tequila collection.
Tasting Notes
Per the producer's official notes: medium to dark amber with a full body; lovely oak aromas married with a rich touch of light vanilla; and a perfectly balanced palate of expressive oak, cracked coffee and tobacco.
How to Enjoy
Neat — coffee, tobacco and bourbon-cask oak at 80 proof ask for a glass, not a shaker — though it builds a serious tequila Old Fashioned. More anejos are in our tequila collection and across our spirits collection.
