Navy Strength: Eclipse, Turned Up
Eclipse has been the sailor’s rum since 1910 — and master blender Trudiann Branker built this edition as a tribute to Mount Gay’s long history with sailing. Navy strength (57.1%, the old gunpowder-proof standard) preserves the bold aromatics that a lower proof would round off, and Branker took the opportunity to age the blend longer and lean harder on the pot still distillate. The result is an older, richer, punchier Eclipse — and at a $30 MSRP for a limited edition, one of the best values in high-proof rum.
Tasting Notes
Ripe banana, vanilla extract, pineapple and milk chocolate on the nose, with surprisingly little ethanol for the proof. The palate is powerful — allspice, molasses cookies, dessert banana, baked peach and coconut, with vanilla and caramel sweetness. Long, warming finish of black pepper, dark chocolate and oak tannin.
How to Enjoy
Neat or with a few drops of water for experienced high-proof drinkers — the aromatics open beautifully. In cocktails it is built for the classics: a Daiquiri, a Mai Tai, or a Navy Grog, where the Barbados rum structure carries the lime and sugar.
