The Tradicional Line Gets Its Anejo

Tradicional is Cuervo's 100% blue agave line — the house's original-recipe range, made at La Rojena in Tequila, Jalisco, the distillery Cuervo traces to 1795 and calls the oldest active distillery in Latin America. For most of the line's life it stopped at reposado; the Anejo, launched in the US in spring 2020, completed the range as its first anejo and its pinnacle expression at launch. Its making is two-stage: more than a year in new, charred American oak for the vanilla-and-nut anejo base, then a finishing rest of up to four months in Irish single malt whiskey barrels, which the brand credits for the expression's spice and smoothness. Explore the house on the Jose Cuervo vendor page and more anejos in our tequila collection.

Tasting Notes

Per the brand: an aroma of cooked agave, vanilla and toffee; a palate of vanilla with nutty accents and spice, complex and mellow; a long, silky finish. The brand's fuller notes add hazelnut and baking spice on the palate with secondary tropical fruit, and launch coverage in The Spirits Business described cooked agave, toasted nuts and vanilla leading to stewed fig, cinnamon baking spice and caramel.

How to Enjoy

Neat or over one large cube — the Irish-barrel finish rewards a slow sip. It also stands up in an Anejo Old Fashioned. More anejos are in our tequila collection and the full range in our spirits collection.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long is Cuervo Tradicional Anejo aged?
More than 12 months in new, charred American oak barrels, then finished for up to four months in Irish single malt whiskey barrels. Claims of three years or more for this expression are not supported by the brand or trade sources.

What makes Tradicional Anejo different from other Cuervo anejos?
The Irish whiskey barrel finish — after its year-plus in new charred American oak, it is the finishing casks that add the spice and smoothness the brand describes, and it was the Tradicional line's first-ever anejo when it launched in 2020.

Is Tradicional Anejo 100% agave?
Yes — 100% blue Weber agave, per the brand, its launch coverage and its Agave Matchmaker record.
