Ōme Norte Bacanora is Sonora's own agave spirit — an 84-proof (42% ABV) bacanora in a 750mL bottle, distilled in Sonora, Mexico by Rafael Quijada. Bacanora has held its own Denomination of Origin since 2000: by law it must be made in Sonora from Agave angustifolia (the local Pacifica/Yaquiana), the same species as espadín — but this is not a mezcal and not a tequila. Ōme Spirits is Cecilia Murrieta's post–La Niña project, and "Norte" is the northern edition of its two-part agave series. Order it online at Del Mesa Liquor, San Diego, CA.

  • Proof / ABV: 84 proof (42% ABV) — 750mL
  • Spirit: bacanora — Agave angustifolia (Pacifica/Yaquiana), Sonora DO
  • Origin: Sonora, Mexico (bacanora must by law be Sonoran)
  • Distiller: Rafael Quijada; Ōme Spirits (Cecilia Murrieta)
  • Context: bacanora was illegal to produce commercially from 1915–1992; DO granted 2000

Sonora's Spirit, Finally Legal

For most of the 20th century bacanora was distilled in secret — production was outlawed from 1915 to 1992. The 2000 Denomination of Origin finally gave Sonora's agave spirit a name and a law, and Ōme Norte carries it: Pacifica agave, double-distilled, the north's answer to Oaxaca's mezcal. See more from Ōme Norte or browse Del Mesa's bacanora shelf.

Tasting Notes

Expect the angustifolia signature — green, peppery agave with desert-herb lift and a clean mineral finish; bacanora typically drinks drier and leaner than a blanco tequila.

How to Enjoy

Neat in a copita, or in any cocktail that calls for blanco tequila — a paloma or ranch water made with bacanora tastes like the same drink with the lights turned up.
