Nocheluna Sotol is a 43% ABV (86 proof) unaged sotol in a 750mL bottle — distilled from the wild Dasylirion plant of the Chihuahuan Desert, not from agave. A collaboration between Pernod Ricard, Casa Lumbre (the makers of Montelobos mezcal and Ancho Reyes), and four-time Grammy winner Lenny Kravitz, it is produced by fourth-generation Maestro Vinatero Don Eduardo "Lalo" Arrieta in Chihuahua, Mexico. Launched in 2022, it is in stock and available to order online at Del Mesa Liquor.

Not Agave — Something Older

Sotol predates tequila and mezcal as a desert spirit: the Dasylirion is a wild succulent, a relative of agave, that survives where nothing else grows, and its heart is cooked for three to four days before a week of open-air fermentation in wooden vats. Nocheluna — "noche" plus "luna," night and moon — is Kravitz's love letter to the spirit after a trip to Chihuahua with the Casa Lumbre team, bottled in a green-tinted clear bottle with the branding embossed in the glass. It drinks like mezcal's wilder cousin. Explore more Nocheluna or compare other agave-adjacent spirits and sotols at Del Mesa Liquor.

Tasting Notes

Nose: Wild herbs and dried stone fruits with subtle smokiness and fresh minerality.

Palate: Sweet caramel entry — honey, cacao, citrus, and fresh mint over a clean mineral core.

Finish: Smooth and lingering, with hints of oak firewood and light sweetness.

How to Enjoy

Sip neat to meet the desert on its own terms, or use it as a mezcal substitute in cocktails — a Nocheluna Paloma or a smoky margarita variation is revelatory. Drinkhacker calls it a genuine mezcal stand-in; it also stands alone over a single cube. Pair with grilled meats or dark chocolate.
