The Rums of Mexico Panela Rum
The Rums of Mexico Panela Rum is a traditional Mexican cane rum from PM Spirits’ Rums of Mexico project, made by Orlando Vásquez in Veracruz from panela — Mexico’s unrefined whole cane sugar — bottled at 47.6% ABV in a 700mL bottle with nothing added after distillation. For generations Vásquez’s family milled fresh cane, boiled the juice and poured it into wooden cone molds to harden into panela; here those cones are rehydrated with spring water, fermented and distilled on his four-plate copper column still. It is available to order online at Del Mesa Liquor.

A Family Sugar Trade, Distilled
The Rums of Mexico bottles the traditional cane spirits of Mexico that locals call aguardiente, cañita or simply ron, naming the farmer, the village, the cane and the still on every release. Panela is Vásquez’s tribute to his family trade: the same boiled cane juice his family has set into cones for generations, taken one step further into the still. Poured beside his fresh-juice Caldo, it is a study in how the base material steers the spirit. Explore more rum from small Mexican producers across our spirits shelves.
Tasting Notes
Coriander, lemon and clay on the nose with a whisper of campfire. The palate is mineral and oily — earthy panela depth, citrus and vanilla cream — and the finish is long and earthy.
How to Enjoy
Try it neat first, then in a Daiquiri or a rum Old Fashioned where its earthy, oily weight stands up to dilution. Find more mixing bottles among our cocktail ingredients.
