Springbank Local Barley 8 Year Old Scotch Whisky 2025
Springbank Local Barley 8 Year Old Scotch Whisky 2025 is the 2025 release of the Local Barley series from Springbank Distillery in Campbeltown, Scotland — the family-owned institution, run by J. & A. Mitchell & Co. since 1828, that malts, distills, matures and bottles every drop on site. This edition was distilled in July 2016 from Bere barley — Britain's oldest cultivated cereal strain — grown at High Ranachan Farm on the Kintyre peninsula and floor-malted at the distillery, then matured eight years in a 50/50 mix of ex-sherry and ex-bourbon casks and bottled in December 2024 at natural cask strength, 58.1% ABV (116.2 proof), non-chill-filtered and naturally colored, in a 700mL bottle. Just 13,500 bottles were released. It is available to order online at Del Mesa Liquor.

The Youngest Local Barley Yet — and One of the Most Distinctive
The Local Barley series is Springbank's annual grain-to-glass argument: one local farm, one barley variety, one vintage, everything done by hand at the distillery. The 2025 edition reaches back to Bere, an ancient six-row barley that predates modern varieties by centuries, and bottles it young at eight years — the youthful vigor of the spirit shines through the sherry and bourbon wood rather than hiding behind it. Local Barley releases vanish within days of release every year. Browse more Campbeltown and single malt bottlings in our whisky collection.
Tasting Notes
Honeyed malt and dried fruit with coastal brine, toasted oak and a gentle peat smoke — complex and full-bodied, with the Bere barley's cereal character and Springbank's signature 2.5-times-distilled weight carrying the cask strength without heat overwhelming the detail.
How to Enjoy
Neat in a tulip glass, with a few drops of water to open the dried fruit and brine. Collectors of the series should compare it with the older editions on our rare and top shelf shelves and across the wider spirits range.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is Bere barley?
Bere is Britain's oldest cultivated barley strain — an ancient six-row variety grown here at High Ranachan Farm near Campbeltown and floor-malted at Springbank, giving this release a distinctive cereal character modern barley varieties do not have.
How does the 8 Year compare with earlier Local Barley releases?
Earlier editions ran 10 to 13 years; the 2025 release is the youngest yet at 8 years, distilled in July 2016 from Bere barley and matured in a 50/50 mix of ex-sherry and ex-bourbon casks, bottled at 58.1% ABV in a run of 13,500 bottles.
Is it chill-filtered?
No. It is bottled at natural cask strength with no chill filtration and natural colour, the way Springbank bottles everything.
