Welcome to the captivating world of moonshine—a timeless American tradition that embodies the essence of craft distillation. Moonshine, often known as "white lightning" or "mountain dew," conjures visions of resourceful distillers producing this unaged elixir under the veil of moonlight.

Moonshine is an authentically American spirit, historically crafted by enterprising distillers who operated in the shadows, outside the realm of taxation and regulation. This unaged and crystal-clear spirit holds a bold and untamed character, reflecting the rugged spirit of its makers. It's a taste of the past, a glimpse into the heritage of American craft distillation, and a testament to the resourcefulness of those who pioneered it.

From Backwoods Stills to Legal Jars

Moonshine is America's original outlaw spirit. For generations, unregistered distillers in the Appalachian hills ran corn whiskey through copper stills at night — by moonlight — and the name stuck. Prohibition turned it into legend, but what survived was a genuine craft tradition: a clear, unaged corn spirit with a sweet, grainy punch that barrel aging would smooth away. Today's moonshine keeps the spirit of that tradition and loses the legal risk. Licensed distilleries in Tennessee and across the South now sell the real thing in the familiar mason jar, and our moonshine collection — 83 products strong and one of the most-visited corners of our store — runs from straight white lightning to an entire orchard of fruit flavors and dessert-style creams.

Straight Shine, Fruit Flavors and Cream Liqueurs

The modern moonshine shelf is really three shelves in one. First, the traditionalists: unaged corn whiskey meant to be sipped and savored, like Tim Smith Moon Chasers The Ritual from one of the most famous names in the shine world. Second, the flavors that made legal moonshine famous — fruit-infused jars built for the porch and the party cooler. Ole Smoky Apple Pie Moonshine is the category's calling card, cinnamon-spiced and endlessly sippable, and Ole Smoky Peaches Moonshine packs real peaches right into the jar. Over at Sugarlands, the Sugarlands Mark and Digger's Rye Apple Moonshine blends rye spice with apple sweetness. Third, the creams: dessert liqueurs like Tennessee Legend Coffee Moonshine that drink like a spiked coffeehouse treat. Between everyday jars, seasonal releases and gift-ready variety packs — including the Ole Smoky 12 Days of Moonshine Minis Holiday Pack, a ready-made tour of the flavor range — this is a collection worth exploring slowly. Start with the full Ole Smoky lineup or browse the Sugarlands jars alongside it. And if you are stocking up for a crowd, the flavored jars are built for sharing: set out three or four, chill them hard, and let your guests work their way down the line.

      Frequently Asked Questions

      Is moonshine legal now?

Yes. Every jar in this collection comes from a licensed, tax-paying distillery — names like Ole Smoky and Sugarlands operate legal distilleries in Tennessee. What you are buying is the traditional unaged corn-whiskey style, made openly instead of in the woods.

What is the difference between moonshine and bourbon?

Time and oak. Bourbon must age in new charred oak barrels, which gives it color and vanilla-caramel depth. Moonshine is bottled unaged (or rested only briefly), so it pours clear and tastes of sweet corn and grain up front. Flavored shines add fruit, spice or cream on top of that base.

How do you drink flavored moonshine?

Chilled, straight from the jar is the classic serve, and the fruit flavors are excellent over ice. They also earn their keep in cocktails — apple pie shine in place of apple brandy, peach shine in iced tea, and the cream liqueurs poured over coffee or ice cream.

      What are the cream moonshines?

A newer branch of the family: dairy-cream liqueurs built on a moonshine base, in flavors like coffee, crème brûlée and butter pecan. They are lower in strength, rich and dessert-like, and best kept refrigerated and served cold.

Can you ship moonshine to me?

We ship nationwide from our family-owned San Diego store, in business since 1974. Orders ship within 1–7 business days, and delivery requires an adult aged 21 or older to sign.
