Oaxaca's Classic, Sustainably Made
Espadín is the workhorse agave of Oaxaca — and Lost Explorer treats it with uncommon care. About 70% of the piñas roast in brick ovens rather than underground earthen pits, a choice that cuts wood consumption and smoke emissions; the facility runs on solar power, and the brand plants at least three agaves for every one harvested. Co-founded by David de Rothschild and Thor Björgólfsson, the house bottles in hand-labeled recycled crystal sealed with biodegradable beeswax. It is mezcal with a conscience and a trophy shelf. Tasting Notes
Nose — fresh herbs with hints of wood from the fire pit. Palate — chopped agave, mesquite, sweet red apple and ripe fruit. Finish — smooth and fruity with a whisper of smoked wood.
How to Enjoy
Neat in a copita to appreciate the balance Don Fortino dialed in at 42%. It also anchors an excellent mezcal old fashioned — the fruit notes love bitters and agave syrup.
