Four Generations of Muscat, Distilled

Tsipouro is Greece's answer to grappa: spirit distilled from grape pomace, double-distilled in the Greek manner, bottled unaged and clear. The Katsaros family has worked its copper stills in Tirnavos since 1856 — the first modern ouzo-and-tsipouro distillery of the region, in the family's own telling. Only the heart of the distillation is kept, rested in stainless steel, and bottled as the natural essence of the grape: fruity and firm, with the Muscat's floral-fruit perfume front and center. Browse the wider brandy shelf or everything from Katsaros, including the house's ouzo.

Tasting Notes

Crystal clear. Fragrant Muscat — grape, blossom and citrus — over a clean pomace-brandy base; fruity and smooth on the palate with a velvety texture, a lingering fruity aftertaste, and the characteristic firmness of a true Tirnavos tsipouro.

How to Enjoy

Serve chilled at around 10°C with Mediterranean dishes, or neat as a digestif; it also stands up in cocktails where a grape-distillate backbone is wanted.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is tsipouro?
Tsipouro is Greece's traditional pomace brandy — spirit distilled from grape skins, seeds and stems. Unlike ouzo, it is not flavored with anise; the classic style is pure and unaged.

Is tsipouro the same as ouzo?
No. Tsipouro is distilled from grape pomace and is usually unflavored; ouzo is an anise-flavored spirit. Both are Greek traditions, but they are different spirits.

What grape is Katsaros Tsipouro made from?
Moschato Tirnavos — the local fragrant Muscat of Hamburg, grown around Tirnavos in Thessaly.

Is this the aged Katsaros tsipouro?
No — this is the classic unaged, clear Tsipouro Tirnavou; Katsaros also makes a separate barrel-aged expression.
