Yellow Spot 12 Year Old Irish Whiskey is a 12-year-old single pot still Irish whiskey at 46% ABV (92 proof), matured a full twelve years in three oak types — American bourbon barrels, Spanish sherry butts and Spanish Malaga sweet-wine casks — at Midleton Distillery in County Cork, Ireland, for Mitchell & Son of Dublin. Triple distilled in copper pot stills from malted and unmalted barley and bottled non chill-filtered in a 750mL bottle. The Malaga cask is unique to Yellow Spot within the Spot range — relaunched in 2012 after the brand's 1960s discontinuation. Buy 12-year Irish whiskey online at Del Mesa Liquor, San Diego, CA.

  • ABV: 46% (92 proof)
  • Size: 750mL
  • Age: 12 years old (stated; full 12-year maturation in all three casks)
  • Origin: Midleton Distillery, County Cork, Ireland — Mitchell & Son, Dublin
  • Production: Single pot still, triple distilled; 12 years in bourbon + sherry + Malaga casks; non chill-filtered

The Twelve-Year Spot

In the Spot color code, yellow means twelve — and those twelve years are spent in full in three cask types, not as a short finish. The Malaga sweet-wine casks are the signature move: Spanish Malaga wine wood lends what Mitchell & Son calls "an exotic sweet note" found in no other Spot whiskey. One of the last whiskies in the historic bonded tradition, from Dublin's oldest wine merchants. Discover the full Spot range or shop 12-year Irish whiskey.

Tasting Notes

The brand publishes no formal tasting notes beyond its claim that the Malaga cask brings an exotic sweet note to the whiskey. In style terms, expect classic single pot still character — creamy spice from the unmalted barley, orchard fruit and honey from the bourbon wood, dried-fruit depth from the sherry butts — rounded by twelve years and that distinctive Malaga sweetness at 92 proof.

How to Enjoy

Neat, always — twelve years of triple-cask maturation deserves an unadulterated pour. A drop of water will coax the Malaga sweetness forward if you want it.

This is the best Irish whiskey I have ever tried. I discovered during a trip to Ireland, by interviewing approximately 20 bartenders.

Skip the Green Spot and go directly to Yellow Spot

Last night was the Green Spot, and tonight, it’s the Yellow Spot. No yellow- caution-light here – a major step-up from the Green Spot. It opens with butterscotch and maraschino cherry-mash-up, then a heavy dose of baked apples with cinnamon and cloves – like grandma used to make (don’t eat the clove buds – I did that once, only once, as a child at grandma’s)… then a bit of black licorice sneaks in. It has a nice light-oily mouthfeel and decent legs, which provide a medium-long finish with spicy baked toffee (almost burnt) and barley (grain, not malt) with some lemon zest and lingering licorice. The bitterness of the lemon zest, clove, and licorice balance the sweetness, resulting in a nicely-balanced dram. Skip the Green Spot and go directly to the Yellow Spot. Drink slow, drink long, drink a variety, drink often.
