The Curved Bottle of Gattinara
The Travaglini family has farmed land in Gattinara since the early 19th century, and the estate winery took its modern shape under Giancarlo Travaglini in 1958. His most famous idea was the bottle itself: a curved, sculpted shape designed so that sediment settles into the bend as the wine is poured, letting a mature Nebbiolo be served without decanting, in dark glass that shields the wine from light. Gattinara, in the hills of Alto Piemonte north of Barolo, grows Nebbiolo on rocky, iron-rich volcanic soils — a cooler, leaner expression of the grape than the Langhe gives. Tasting Notes
Deep pomegranate red in the glass. The nose is delicately fruity and mineral — cherries and rose petal with liquorice and a trace of black pepper. On the palate it is fresh and finely textured, with silky tannins, red fruit and spice, and a long, smooth finish. Two decades in bottle have softened the wine into its tertiary register: dried flowers, leather and sweet spice around the cherry core.
How to Enjoy
Serve at cool cellar temperature, around 60–64°F, in a large Burgundy-style glass. The curved bottle does the decanting work for you — pour steadily and the sediment stays in the bend. A 2005 Riserva belongs with food: braised lamb, mushroom risotto, roast game or aged Parmigiano Reggiano. More Italian reds are in our red wine collection and the wider wine collection.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is the Travaglini bottle curved?
Giancarlo Travaglini designed the shape in 1958 so the bend traps sediment as the wine pours, removing the need to decant; the dark glass also protects the wine from light.
What grape is Gattinara made from?
Nebbiolo — called Spanna in northern Piedmont. Travaglini's Gattinara Riserva is 100% Nebbiolo from the Gattinara DOCG.
How long is the Gattinara Riserva aged?
Four years before release: three years in oak casks, followed by rest in bottle. The Riserva is only produced in the best vintages.
