Kentucky's Single Malt, Brewing-Born

Town Branch began as a brewery that learned to distil: single malt distilling started at the Lexington brewery in 2008, four years before the distillery officially opened in 2012, which gives it some of the oldest Kentucky single malt stocks in the state. The beer connection is not a footnote — the malt whiskey ages in barrels that held the house Bourbon Barrel Ale after holding bourbon, so the cask story runs brewery to distillery and back. The expression was first released in 2019 and has since taken a 2023 World Whiskies Awards Gold for Best Small Batch Single Malt 12 Years & Under and a 2020 San Francisco Double Gold (both per the distillery). Find it among the American pours in our whisky collection, or beside its bourbon sibling on the Town Branch vendor page.

Tasting Notes

Nose: Malt and biscuit with dried apricot and peach (distillery notes). Palate: Molasses, vanilla and brown sugar with nutmeg warmth. Finish: Orange peel over sweet malt — full, because nothing was chill-filtered out.

How to Enjoy

Neat or with a splash of water — at 87 proof the malt opens quickly. Scotch drinkers will recognise the barley frame; bourbon drinkers will recognise the Kentucky barrel sweetness around it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Town Branch Single Malt a Scotch? No — it is an American single malt distilled and aged in Lexington, Kentucky. It follows the single malt method (100% malted barley, one distillery) under Kentucky skies, not Scotland's.

How old is it? A minimum of seven years; the distillery's current blending strategy works with a 7-to-10-year range for this expression.

What are Bourbon Barrel Ale barrels? Barrels that first aged bourbon, then aged the distillery's own Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Ale beer, then came back to age this single malt — a cask cycle unique to a combined brewery-distillery.
