Nebbiolo on Volcanic Hills Below Monte Rosa

Gattinara is one of Italy's smallest great appellations — about 100 hectares of hillside vines west of the Sesia river, a DOC in 1967 and a DOCG since 1990. Torraccia del Piantavigna, formally founded in Ghemme in 1997 by Alessandro Francoli on family vine-planting roots going back to 1977, works the Gerbidoni and Lurghe vineyards in Gattinara itself: about 7 acres of Guyot-trained Nebbiolo at 320–380 metres on porphyry, syenite and quartz soils of volcanic origin, hand-harvested in early October, fermented in steel with malolactic, then rested three years in Allier oak. Tasting Notes

Colour: Ruby red turning garnet with age, per the importer's notes. Nose: Intense yet elegant, with a hint of violet. Palate: Dry and harmonious, with a lightly tannic aftertaste — the classic Gattinara profile of austere, mineral Nebbiolo with strong character, now softened by bottle age.

How to Enjoy

Decant gently and serve with roasted meats, game, mushroom risotto or mature cheeses. A sound 2010 is in its drinking window now on the producer's own longevity guidance — enjoy it rather than cellaring it further.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Gattinara? A small DOCG in Alto Piemonte for Nebbiolo — locally called Spanna — grown on volcanic hillsides below Monte Rosa. Its wines are traditionally more austere and mineral than Barolo, with strong tannins and long ageing potential.

Is this 100% Nebbiolo? Yes — the producer and its US importer both specify 100% Nebbiolo for this bottling, stricter than the DOCG minimum of 90%.

How long was it aged? At least 3 years in medium Allier French oak casks and at least 6 months in bottle, per the producer — beyond the DOCG minimum of 35 months total with 24 in wood.
