The Soft, Sweet Finish of the Original Trio

When Barton 1792 — the Sazerac-owned distillery Thomas S. Moore built up from 1889 until Prohibition closed it in 1920 — launched its first ultra-premium brand in December 2020, the idea was time: high-rye Kentucky bourbon aged for many years in new charred oak, then refilled into wine and spirits casks for additional years, where most finishes last months. The label's racehorse honours Belle of Nelson, namesake of one of Moore's earliest brands and winner of the 1878 Kentucky Oaks. In the Port expression, those extra years are spent in Port wine casks, and the result is the soft, sweet-leaning bottling of the trio — bottled, fittingly, at its highest proof. Find the other finishes on the Thomas S. Moore vendor page and in our bourbon whiskey collection.

Tasting Notes

Per the producer's launch release: soft and sweet, with subtle hints of vanilla and baking spices; the distiller's notes add subtle fruit from the Port cask to that vanilla-and-spice frame.

How to Enjoy

Neat as an after-dinner sipper — the Port finish makes this the dessert-adjacent pour of the trio — or with one cube, and it builds a rich, fruit-toned Manhattan. More finished bourbons are in our spirits collection.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does a Port cask finish do to bourbon?
After its first ageing in new charred oak, the bourbon rests in casks that previously held Port wine, picking up soft fruit, vanilla and baking-spice depth — here for additional years, under Barton 1792's extended-finish programme.

Which Thomas S. Moore finish is strongest?
This one: the Port Cask Finish is bottled at 98.9 proof, ahead of the Chardonnay (97.9) and the Cabernet Sauvignon (95.3).

Who makes Thomas S. Moore bourbon?
Barton 1792 Distillery in Bardstown, Kentucky, owned by the Sazerac Company; the brand honours Thomas S. Moore, who built the distillery in 1889.
