The Fine Oak Experiment, at Its Peak Age for America
For most of its history The Macallan meant sherry casks alone. Fine Oak, launched in 2004, was the distillery's first departure: a triple cask recipe that married sherry-seasoned European oak and sherry-seasoned American oak with bourbon-seasoned American oak, trading some of the Sherry Oak line's dark weight for something lighter, more floral and more exotic. The 17 Year Old, introduced for the US market in 2006, sat near the top of that range — and the range itself has since been discontinued, which makes sealed Fine Oak 17 a closed chapter of Macallan history. Tasting Notes
The Macallan's own notes describe a light amber whisky: heady, exotic and floral on the nose, with a hint of jasmine, tropical fruit and peat; soft and rich on the palate, with citrus, spice and wood smoke; and a lingering finish with a hint of orange zest.
How to Enjoy
Neat, in a tulip glass, with time in the glass — the jasmine and tropical fruit need air, and water or ice will flatten the delicacy that sets Fine Oak apart from the sherry-cask Macallans.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between Fine Oak and Sherry Oak Macallan? Sherry Oak is matured only in sherry-seasoned European oak. Fine Oak is triple cask matured — sherry-seasoned European oak, sherry-seasoned American oak and bourbon-seasoned American oak — giving a lighter, more floral and citrus-led profile.
Is Macallan Fine Oak 17 still made? No — the Fine Oak range was rebranded Triple Cask Matured in 2018 and has since been discontinued, and the 17 Year Old age statement did not continue. Bottles like this one are remaining stock of a discontinued expression.
What is the ABV and size? 43% ABV (86 proof), 750mL — the US bottling.
A discontinued triple cask Macallan that will not be made again — collectors can order the Fine Oak 17 Year Old online at Del Mesa Liquor in San Diego, CA, while it remains.
