The Lost Distillery Company Classic Selection Auchnagie is a 750mL blended malt Scotch whisky bottled at 43% ABV (86 proof) with no age statement — a modern recreation of the whisky once made at Auchnagie, a remote farmhouse distillery near Tulliemet, south-east of Pitlochry in Perthshire, which operated from 1812 until 1911 and was dismantled the following year. It is available to order online at Del Mesa Liquor.

  • ABV: 43% (86 proof) — Classic Selection (higher tiers are 46%; do not confuse them)
  • Size: 750mL
  • Style: Blended malt Scotch whisky, no age statement
  • Origin: Scotland — a recreation of Auchnagie, Tulliemet, Perthshire (Highlands)
  • History: Original distillery 1812–1911, dismantled 1912; also known as Tullymet

The First Lost Distillery, From a Perthshire Farm

Auchnagie began as a remote farmhouse distillery — also known as Tullymet — and lived the precarious life of small 19th-century distilleries: at least seven owners, long silent stretches, and the constant pressures of water, money, duty law and local demand, before it closed in 1911 and was dismantled in 1912. In its later years it was, by retailer accounts of the brand's history, a prized part of the Dewar's stable. The Lost Distillery Company recreates such lost styles without old stock or secret recipes: an archiving team including Professor Michael Moss of the University of Glasgow researches ten key components — era, locality, water, barley, yeast, peat, mash tun, washback, still and wood — and blenders then marry single malts to match the evidence; Auchnagie was the first release in the series. Browse the house on the Lost Distillery Company vendor page and the wider shelf in our whisky collection.

Tasting Notes

Master of Malt's note for the Classic Selection: digestive biscuit, banana and honey on the nose; sponge cake, honey, rice pudding and dried apricot on the palate; a light baking-spice finish. An independent review (Whisky Saga) adds summer orchard fruit, mango, melon and apricot with a waxy note, then delicate honey, caramel and vanilla with pepper and ginger.

How to Enjoy

Neat, or with a splash of water to open the honey and orchard fruit — a gentle, floral Highland style that suits a slow evening pour rather than a cocktail. More Scotch is in our whisky collection and the full range in our spirits collection.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where was the original Auchnagie distillery?
Near the hamlet of Tulliemet, about six miles south-east of Pitlochry in Perthshire, Scotland. It operated from 1812 to 1911 and was dismantled in 1912; it was also known as Tullymet Distillery.

Is this whisky actually from 1911?
No — it is a modern blended malt recreating Auchnagie's style from archival research. The Lost Distillery Company is explicit that it has no old stock: the recreation is built from its ten-component research method.

How strong is Auchnagie Classic Selection?
43% ABV (86 proof), in a 750mL bottle. The 46% Auchnagie listings are the higher Archivist/Vintage tiers, not this Classic Selection.
