Sextro Rye Red Label
Sextro Rye Red Label is a 750mL Iowa rye whiskey made from 100% rye grain, aged in two used oak barrels for at least 18 months in Carroll County, Iowa. It is the "Private Reserve" of Iowa Legendary Rye — the small distillery reviving Lorine Sextro's Prohibition-era rye, distilled in small replica pot stills and bottled by hand. The rye and water come only from Carroll and Crawford counties, a few miles of Iowa farmland from grain to glass. It is available to order online at Del Mesa Liquor.

Grandma Lorine's Rye, Revived in Carroll County
Lorine Sextro learned to distill during Prohibition — a bootlegger housed on the family farm taught her the craft, and by the early 1930s she was making her own small-batch 100% rye at the farm between Templeton and Manning. Her grandson Heath Schneider revived the recipe as Iowa Legendary Rye, working the way she did: small 26-gallon replica pot stills, local rye and water from Carroll and Crawford counties only, and bottles filled and labelled by hand. Red Label is the house's Private Reserve expression of that rye. Explore Iowa whiskey on the Sextro Rye vendor page, or browse our rye whiskey collection.
Tasting Notes
The distillery publishes no official tasting notes for Red Label. What the verified recipe promises is a grain-led rye: 100% rye spice up front, softened rather than sweetened by its rest in used oak — a drier, farmhouse style of rye in the Prohibition-era Iowa tradition.
How to Enjoy
Neat or with a single cube to open the rye spice, and a natural fit for a Manhattan or Old Fashioned built on a dry, grain-led base. More American rye is in our whisky collection.
