Scorpion Mezcal Anejo 5 Year is the longest-rested bottling in the Scorpion range — 40% ABV (80 proof), 750mL, distilled from 100% Espadin agave in Oaxaca, Mexico and aged five years in French oak barrels of less than 200 litres until the agave and the wood are fully married, then bottled by hand in small single-barrel batches in a French glass decanter. The bottle carries the house signature: a real scorpion sealed inside. It is available to order online at Del Mesa Liquor.

Five Years of French Oak on Oaxacan Espadin

Scorpion, the house founded by Douglas French and produced in San Agustin de las Juntas, Oaxaca, built its name on two things: its Espadin mezcal — cooked in steam autoclaves rather than smoky pits, which keeps the profile unusually clean for mezcal — and the scorpion in every bottle. The 5 Year is where the house shows patience — the joven spirit laid into French oak for a full five years, far beyond the anejo minimum, until caramelised agave, dried fruit and polished wood speak at the same volume. It drinks like the bridge between mezcal and fine aged tequila that anejo mezcal, at its best, can be. Find it in our mezcal selection and the anejo shelves, browse the tequila and mezcal range, or see the house on the Scorpion Mezcal vendor page.

Tasting Notes

Nose: Roasted pineapple, raw honey, vanilla and caramel with cinnamon bark, fresh herbs and a trace of smouldering embers. Palate: Grilled pineapple and wildflower honey over oiled leather, charred oak and exotic peppercorns. Finish: Long — toffee, peppery spice and smoky oak.

How to Enjoy

Neat, in a stemmed glass, with time — five years of oak deserve a slow pour. It also makes a luxurious anejo Old Fashioned for mezcal drinkers.
