Powers John's Lane Irish Whiskey — the John's Lane Release — is a 750mL single pot still Irish whiskey matured for 12 years and bottled at 46% ABV (92 proof), non-chill filtered, by Irish Distillers at Midleton, County Cork. Made from a mash of malted and unmalted barley and triple distilled in traditional copper pot stills, it is matured mainly in first-fill American bourbon casks with a small contribution of whiskey from Oloroso sherry butts — a celebration of the original John's Lane distillery style. It is available to order online at Del Mesa Liquor.

A Glimpse of the Original John's Lane

John's Lane, off Thomas Street in Dublin, was Powers' spiritual home — the distillery James Power founded in 1791 — and the John's Lane Release is the producer's celebration of that original pot still style: a single pot still whiskey, with no grain whiskey in it, built the way John's Lane made it. The make is malted and unmalted barley, triple distilled in traditional copper pot stills at Midleton, then given a full twelve years mainly in first-fill American bourbon casks, lifted by a small contribution of whiskey matured in Oloroso sherry butts. The results have been recognised at the top level: Gold at the IWSC 2019, and Gold in the Single Pot Still – Super Premium round of the Irish Whiskey Masters 2020, per the organisers' published results. Tasting Notes

Per the producer: a nose of earthy aromas — leather, tobacco, charred wood, dark chocolate and treacle toffee; a taste that opens full-bodied and spicy, then settles into vanilla, honey and dried apricot; and a finish of lingering honey sweetness on toasted oak.

How to Enjoy

Neat, at full 46% — the pot still spice and twelve years of first-fill oak need no help — or with a teaspoon of water to open the toffee and apricot. More Irish pot still whiskey lives in our whisky collection and across our spirits collection.

Peaches and apricots

In honor of St Patty’s Day, I thought it only appropriate to sip an Irish dram this evening. It opens with peaches and apricots, in a brown-sugar syrup – sticky and sweet, followed by a heavy dose of Irish cream – Bailey’s – which lingers. Through the mid-palate, malt and heavy honey. It finishes with light brown sugar, and coconut milk… and finally a bit of cinnamon. The legs are good, holding that sweet syrup on the tongue. Overall, it is a bit sweet for me, but very enjoyable. Drink slow, drink long, drink a variety, drink often.
