Porfidio Americana Blanco
Porfidio Americana Blanco is a 750mL unaged agave spirit with an origin story found nowhere else in the category: it is distilled in the highlands of India's Deccan Plateau from Agave americana — the species carried from Mexico to India in the colonial era, where it naturalised across the magnesium-rich plateau. Part of Porfidio's Single-Agave series, it is bottled fresh off the still to put one agave species, unadorned, at the centre of the glass. Order it online at Del Mesa Liquor in San Diego, CA.

An Agave Spirit from the Deccan Plateau
Agave americana reached India from Mexico centuries ago, planted along the railways of the Raj, and spread so vigorously across the Deccan Plateau that it became part of the landscape. The Porfidio Single-Agave project — a joint venture between Porfidio founder Martin Grassl and Indian distiller Desmond Nazareth — set out to distill that inheritance. The series' premise is comparative botany: each bottling takes a single agave species, processes every one the same way — first-press juice from oven-baked agave, bio-fermentation, meticulous alembic distillation in small lots — and bottles it unaged, so the differences in the glass are the differences between the plants themselves. The Americana is the edition built on India's adopted agave. Browse the house on the Porfidio vendor page.
Tasting Notes
An unaged agave spirit in the blanco style: bright, vegetal agave character with the raw plant's green, earthy edges intact, since no wood has intervened to soften or sweeten it. Expect the clean, direct profile the series is designed to show — the species speaking before any barrel can.
How to Enjoy
Sip it neat at room temperature, blanco-style, to taste the species comparison the series is built on — or pour it wherever a blanco tequila would go and taste how the Deccan's agave answers Mexico's. More agave spirits are in our tequila and agave collection.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Porfidio Americana a tequila?
No. Tequila can only be made in Mexico from blue Weber agave. This is an agave spirit distilled in India from Agave americana — a different species, on a different continent, in the blanco (unaged) style.
Why is there agave in India?
Agave americana was transplanted from Mexico during the colonial era — famously planted along railway lines — and naturalised across the Deccan Plateau, where this spirit's agave grows.
What is the Porfidio Single-Agave series?
A series of unaged spirits, each distilled from one agave species under identical methods, so drinkers can compare the character of the plants themselves without oak in the way.
