The Liqueur a Trip to Brazil Built
In 1985 a Cointreau master distiller travelled to Brazil in search of oranges and came home captivated by maracujá — passion fruit. Back in France he built a liqueur around it, and Passoã launched in Europe in 1986 and worldwide in 1994, billed by its makers as the world's first passion fruit liqueur. The brand passed from Rémy Cointreau to Lucas Bols (joint venture in 2016, full ownership in 2020), but the formula never changed sides: real Brazilian passion fruit juice, a sweet-tart balance, and that black bottle. It anchors our liqueurs shelf and half the tropical drinks in our cocktails collection — see everything under the name on the Passoa vendor page.
Tasting Notes
Nose: Dominant ripe passion fruit, with red berries and citrus behind it. Palate: Sweet and juicy up front, then the fruit's natural tang and a light bitterness balance it out. Finish: Refreshing and tropical, passion fruit carrying through.
How to Enjoy
Its signature serve is the Porn Star Martini — shaken with vodka and vanilla, Prosecco on the side. It also pours long with tonic or sparkling water, twists a Margarita or Mojito tropical, and brightens a Sangria. Chill it, keep the pour generous, and let the fruit do the work.
