Papalin 5 Year Old Jamaica High Ester Rum 2024 is Luca Gargano's love letter to the lost Jamaican blending tradition: a 63-barrel blend of three Jamaican distilleries — Worthy Park, Long Pond, and Hampden — fully tropically aged 5 years in Jamaica and bottled in October 2024. The US import is the 57% ABV (114 proof) overproof bottling, 750mL — available to order online at Del Mesa Liquor, San Diego, CA.

Papalin is a project of Velier, the Genoa-based independent bottler, conceived to revive the 19th-century Jamaican practice of blending rums across distilleries — a tradition that faded after the 1970s. This 2024 release is the highest-ester-content Papalin to date. The blend is 100% copper double-retort pot-still rum spanning the full ester range: Worthy Park's light WPL (60–120 gr/hlPA), Long Pond's heavy STCE (550–700 gr/hlPA), and Hampden's extreme C<>H (1,300–1,400 gr/hlPA). No adulteration — no sugar, no color, nothing added.

Tasting notes (per the US distributor sellsheet and reviewer consensus): a full, unctuous nose of vanilla, lemon, cane sugar, mint, and fresh walnut, opening with air to ginger, cinnamon, overripe banana, and heady florals — "as soon as you pull the top off, people in the room will turn their heads." The palate is rich and estery: candied pineapple, soft banana, mint, lemon peel, sugar syrup, and spice. A long, warm finish of dry oak, warm spice, and dried herbs lingers for minutes. RumX community score: 79/100.

Why buy this rum? Because high-ester Jamaican blends at 57% overproof, with full distillery and ester-mark transparency, are among the most sought-after bottles in modern rum — and this is Velier's most extreme Papalin ever, a single-island time capsule of Jamaica's pot-still heritage. Browse the Papalin brand collection, more rum, and other fine spirits.

Serving note: sip neat in a tulip to experience the full funk; a single drop of water markedly softens and integrates the 57% overproof. Also stands up to a classic Jamaican Daiquiri or Mai Tai for those who want the funk in a mix.

What makes Papalin "high ester" rum? It blends three Jamaican marques spanning the full ester range — Worthy Park WPL, Long Pond STCE, and Hampden C<>H — that ester load is what gives the funk of bananas, pineapple, solvent, and spice.

Is there more than one 2024 Papalin release? Yes — Velier bottled the same 63-barrel blend at 47° and at 57° Overproof. The US market receives the 57% overproof (750 mL).

Who is Velier? The Genoa-based Italian bottler led by Luca Gargano since 1983 — one of the world's most respected independent rum bottlers, and the creator of the Papalin project reviving 19th-century Jamaican blended rum.
