Named for an Eclipse and a Comet
Mount Gay named Eclipse for the double phenomenon of 1910 — the total solar eclipse visible from Barbados in the same year as the passage of Halley's Comet — and the name has carried the house's signature blend ever since. The distillery's oldest surviving deed dates to 1703, a heritage the brand states as over 320 years of rum making in St Lucy, with coral-filtered well water and Barbadian and Caribbean molasses distilled in copper pot and column stills. Eclipse is the benchmark: in the brand's own 2021 results statement it took Silver at the IWSC, Silver at the ADI Craft Spirit Awards and Gold from the Beverage Testing Institute.
