Maxime Trijol Extra is a 40% ABV, 750mL cognac drawn entirely from the Grande Champagne — the Premier Cru of Cognac, France — and presented in a decanter bottle. "Extra" is one of Cognac's oldest age mentions, in the same legal band as XO: the youngest eau-de-vie in the blend is at least ten years old, and in Trijol's Grande Champagne range this bottling sits above the XO, between the Reserve and the Ancestral. It is available to order online at Del Mesa Liquor.

Above the XO: Grande Champagne at Full Maturity

Maxime Trijol is one of Cognac's great grower-distillers: the family installed its first still at Saint-Martial-sur-Ne in 1859, works 22 Charentais pot stills, and grows, distils, ages and bottles its own grapes — control from vine to bottle that few houses keep. Its vineyards sit in Grande and Petite Champagne, and the Extra is drawn purely from the Grande, the chalk-soil cru whose eaux-de-vie age the longest and most gracefully in the region. As the mature flagship of that single-cru range, it shows the cru's signature rancio and candied depth at full stretch. Browse the house's other grades in our cognac collection, or on the Maxime Trijol vendor page.

Tasting Notes

Nose: Crystallised fruit and liquorice (house notes), with rancio, candied peel, stone fruit and aniseed. Palate: Fine, balanced and elegant, the mature Grande Champagne fruit carried on silky oak. Finish: Long and persistent, topaz-gold in the glass.

How to Enjoy

Serve neat at 20–25°C in a tulip glass after dinner — a cognac at this maturity asks for nothing added, and opens slowly in the glass.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does "Extra" mean on a cognac? Extra is a BNIC-regulated age mention in the same minimum band as XO and Hors d'age: the youngest eau-de-vie in the blend must be at least ten years old. In Maxime Trijol's Grande Champagne range, the Extra is positioned above the XO.

Is Maxime Trijol Extra a single-cru cognac? Yes — it is made entirely from grapes grown in the Grande Champagne, the Premier Cru of Cognac, mainly Ugni Blanc.

How is Maxime Trijol Extra different from the XO Grande Champagne? Both are 100% Grande Champagne at 40% ABV, but the Extra sits a step higher in the range — between the Reserve and the Ancestral — as the more mature decanter bottling.
