Louis XIII Cognac Classic Decanter is a 750mL presentation of Remy Martin's flagship cognac, bottled at 40% ABV: a blend of up to 1,200 eaux-de-vie sourced entirely from Grande Champagne, the premier cru of Cognac, whose components have aged between 40 and 100 years in tiercons — century-old, thin-walled Limousin oak casks no longer made. Created in 1874 by Paul-Emile Remy Martin, it is presented in a handmade, individually numbered crystal decanter modelled on a flask recovered from the 1569 Battle of Jarnac battlefield, inside the house's signature red coffret. It is available to order online at Del Mesa Liquor.

A Blend No Single Cellar Master Will Ever Taste Finished

Louis XIII works on a timescale no other flagship attempts: since 1874, each cellar master has set aside the finest Grande Champagne eaux-de-vie for successors they will never meet, knowing the blend those lots eventually enter will be tasted a lifetime later. Paul-Emile Remy Martin created the cognac for the house's 150th anniversary, named it for the king under whom the family had settled in Cognac, and housed it in a decanter copied from a metal flask found on the Jarnac battlefield — every Classic decanter since is handmade, numbered, and finished with a gold neck, presented in the red coffret. The current cellar master, Baptiste Loiseau (since 2014, succeeding Pierrette Trichet, the house's first female cellar master), describes a youngest drop of at least forty years and an oldest approaching a century. The house's wider range is on the Remy Martin vendor page, among the pinnacle bottles of our cognac collection.

Tasting Notes

The producer's own profile: myrrh, honey, dried roses, plum, honeysuckle, cigar box, leather, figs and passion fruit — a palate that keeps evolving for more than an hour after the pour.

How to Enjoy

The house serve is neat, drop by drop, in fine crystal, at room temperature — keep the decanter upright, below 20°C, away from humidity and direct sunlight. This is a meditation pour, not a mixer. More of Cognac's great houses are in our cognac collection.

Frequently Asked Questions

How old is Louis XIII?
It carries no single age statement. The blend combines up to 1,200 Grande Champagne eaux-de-vie whose components range from at least 40 years old to around 100 years — each generation of cellar master lays down eaux-de-vie for a blend their successors will finish.

What makes Louis XIII different from other Remy Martin cognacs?
Source and time: 100% Grande Champagne eaux-de-vie only, aged in century-old tiercon casks, blended across a 40–100-year component range, and presented in a handmade numbered crystal decanter in the signature red coffret.

Where does the decanter design come from?
Paul-Emile Remy Martin modelled it on a 16th-century metal flask recovered from the battlefield of Jarnac (1569), which he acquired around 1850 and reproduced in crystal for the 1874 creation.
