A Magdalena Cooperative Classic
Los Valientes — "the brave ones" — was made by a tequila cooperative in Magdalena, a Los Valles town with a distilling history as old as the town of Tequila itself. The method recorded for the brand is traditional valley work: stone and brick ovens, roller-mill extraction, stainless fermentation and a double run through pot stills. Bottles were traditionally sold wrapped in a burlap sack with a leather lace, per retailer and press accounts of the packaging. The brand was reported out of production in 2017, which makes surviving bottles a small piece of Magdalena history. Find it on the Los Valientes vendor page or among the rest of our tequila shelf.
Tasting Notes
Nose: Wood and agave with spice and vanilla; tasting panels add baked agave, melon and cinnamon. Palate: Sweet vanilla and oak, slightly oily in texture. Finish: Spicy but fruity, clean and on the shorter side.
How to Enjoy
Pour it neat or with a single cube — a brick-oven reposado of this style rewards slow sipping over mixing, though it will happily carry a Ranch Water.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does reposado mean? "Rested" — a tequila aged in oak for at least two months and under a year, which softens the agave and adds vanilla and wood tones. No source publishes Los Valientes' exact rest, so this listing states the class, not a house figure.
Where was Los Valientes made? At NOM 1463, Cooperativa Tequilera La Magdalena, in Magdalena, Jalisco — per Agave Matchmaker's distillery records and retailer listings.
Is Los Valientes still produced? TasteTequila reported in 2017 that the brand was no longer in production and had mostly been sold in Mexico before appearing in the US — bottles in circulation are existing stock.
A cooperative-made Magdalena reposado that is getting harder to find — order Los Valientes from Del Mesa Liquor in San Diego, CA while it lasts.
