Jose Cuervo 250th Aniversario Extra Anejo Tequila is a 40% ABV (80 proof), 750mL extra anejo released in 2008 to mark 250 years since 1758, when Don Jose Antonio de Cuervo received a grant of land from King Ferdinand VI of Spain to cultivate agave — the founding act of the house that would receive the first commercial tequila licence in 1795 and build La Rojena distillery in 1812. The tequila is 100% blue agave, hand-selected at full maturity from a single estate crop; press materials describe pinas slow-cooked 72 hours in a brick oven and pressed once. The liquid is aged a minimum of three years, blended with reserve tequila from the family's cellar demijohns — reserves described in brand materials as including tequila laid down for up to a century — and finished in Spanish sherry casks. It comes in a hand-blown, individually numbered glass decanter with a glass stopper, presented in a solid oak gift box. It is available to order online at Del Mesa Liquor.

Two and a Half Centuries in a Numbered Decanter

Few bottles carry their maker's whole history. The 250 Aniversario was built as a monument: estate agave from the family's original lands, a brick-oven cook, years in oak, a measure of the cellar's demijohn reserves — glass vessels in which the family has rested tequila for generations — and a sherry-cask finish, bottled into a decanter blown and numbered by hand. It is a collector's release from the oldest active distillery in Latin America, and deliberately distinct from the house's separate Reserva de la Familia. View the house on the Jose Cuervo vendor page or browse the tequila collection.

Tasting Notes

Nose: Lightly toasted oak, vanilla, almonds, walnut and chocolate, with clove and a pronounced cinnamon note (brand note). Palate: Exceptionally soft and velvety — agave, butterscotch and vanilla with a hint of pepper. Finish: Sweet, with subtle agave, oak and vanilla.

How to Enjoy

Serve neat, like a fine Cognac, in a snifter, at room temperature. This is a slow sipping tequila — no ice, no mixer, no garnish needed.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the 250th anniversary mark? The 1758 royal land grant to Don Jose Antonio de Cuervo to cultivate agave — 250 years before this bottling's 2008 release. The first commercial tequila licence followed in 1795.

What are the demijohn reserves? The Cuervo family's cellar keeps tequila in large glass demijohns, some laid down for many decades; brand materials describe the 250 Aniversario blend as including reserve tequila from those demijohns.

Is this the same as Reserva de la Familia? No — they are separate extra anejo releases with different histories and blends. This is the 250th anniversary decanter bottling.
