Two Anniversaries, One Reopening

Jack Daniel's own telling of this set starts with December 5, 1933: the day National Repeal gave the distillery a future again. Tennessee's production ban ran five years longer, so when the Lynchburg distillery finally reopened in 1938, whiskey was made the way Mr. Jack made it — mellowed drop by drop through ten feet of hard sugar maple charcoal, the same Lincoln County Process the distillery still uses today. Released in 2008 to mark both anniversaries at once, the set pairs the two bottles in a mirror-backed cherry-wood case with twin opening doors, the bottles carrying their original hang tags and mounted commemorative coins. More from the distillery is on the Jack Daniel's vendor page and in our whisky collection.

Tasting Notes

The distillery's charcoal-mellowed Tennessee whiskey character runs through the anniversary bottlings: mellow oak and vanilla from the barrel, the soft sweetness the sugar maple charcoal mellowing is known for, and a smooth, warm finish — the house style that resumed, unchanged, when production restarted in 1938.

How to Enjoy

Pour the anniversary whiskey neat or over a single large cube, and keep the set's presentation box for the shelf — this is a gift and collector piece first. More gift presentations are in our spirits collection.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is in the Jack Daniel's Prohibition Anniversary Gift Set?
Two 750mL bottles of Jack Daniel's Tennessee Whiskey at 45% ABV (90 proof) — the 75th Anniversary Repeal of Prohibition bottle and the 70th Anniversary Distillery Reopening bottle — in a mirror-backed cherry-wood display case with hang tags and commemorative coins, released in 2008.

Why did the Jack Daniel Distillery reopen five years after Repeal?
National Repeal in 1933 did not end Tennessee's state ban on alcohol production, which ran until 1938 — only then could the Lynchburg distillery legally make whiskey again.

How is Jack Daniel's Tennessee whiskey made?
It is mellowed drop by drop through ten feet of hard sugar maple charcoal before barreling — the Lincoln County Process that defines Tennessee whiskey and that the distillery resumed in 1938 exactly as Mr. Jack had made it.
