Seven Oaks: the House That Paso Built
Jerry Lohr planted in Paso Robles when the region was still a rumour, and the Seven Oaks Cabernet — named for the seven oak trees above its original blocks — became the wine that carried the family winery to national shelves. The 2017 followed the end of a five-year drought: generous winter rain, an early-September heat spike the unripe Cabernet rode out, and a peak harvest across the first three weeks of October. Tasting Notes
From the winery's fact sheet (winemaking director Steve Peck): dark and dense in colour; layered black cherry, currant and blueberry aromas with dark chocolate, cocoa powder and roasted coffee from the barrels; high-toned red berry fruit on the palate with bright acidity and a structure that is dense and soft at once.
How to Enjoy
Serve at cool room temperature after a short decant, with grilled steak, barbecue brisket or a mushroom risotto. The winery's own cellaring note: balanced and fruit-forward on release, with structure to age five years or longer.
