Born in a Hangar on the Bay
Hangar 1 grew out of St. George Spirits, the Alameda eau de vie distillery Jorg Rupf founded in 1982; the vodka itself arrived in 2001, made in — and named for — the hangar at the former Alameda Naval Air Station. Proximo Spirits acquired the brand in 2010 and kept production in Alameda, in the building beside St. George. The grape-and-grain recipe sets it apart from grain-only vodkas: pot-distilled Viognier brings floral softness, column-distilled wheat brings structure. Tasting Notes
Nose: Fresh and slightly floral, with Asian pear and honeysuckle hints. Palate: Round and smooth with a touch of sweetness. Finish: A light perfume note lingers.
How to Enjoy
Serve it ice-cold and neat to taste the grape character, or in a martini where its floral edge shows; it also lifts a vodka tonic with a lemon twist.
