Hamilton False Idol Overproof 151 is a 1L overproof rum at 75.5% ABV — 151 proof. Ed Hamilton blended it with Anthony Schmidt of False Idol, the San Diego tiki bar, to stand up to the bar's most aggressive drinks: 85% aged Demerara rum from Guyana and 15% heavy-bodied Jamaican pot still rum from Worthy Park Estate, stirred 48 hours at full strength, then diluted to 151 proof with filtered well water at the Five & 20 Distillery in Westfield, New York. It is available to order online at Del Mesa Liquor.

Built With a Tiki Bar, For Tiki Drinks

False Idol is Little Italy's temple of tiki, and its namesake rum was blended over months of tasting with the bar's Anthony Schmidt and Ed Hamilton of the Ministry of Rum: a Demerara base for depth, a charge of Worthy Park pot still for funk, and nothing taken down below 151 proof, so a float of it flavours a whole drink instead of vanishing into one. See the blender's range on the Hamilton vendor page or browse more rum.

Tasting Notes

Deep amber in the glass; the core character reported for this bottling is molasses, maple and treacle — dark, burnt-sugar depth built for tiki cocktails and floats in the Zombie and Jet Pilot class.

How to Enjoy

Use it as the overproof float or the backbone split-base in Zombies, Jet Pilots and Navy Grogs. At 151 proof it is flammable and potent — measure carefully, never sip it neat as a first pour, and keep it away from open flame except for a controlled cocktail float.

Frequently Asked Questions

How strong is 151 proof? 75.5% ABV — more than double a standard 80-proof spirit. A small measure flavours an entire tiki drink.

What is in the blend? 85% aged Demerara rum from Guyana and 15% Jamaican pot still rum from Worthy Park Estate, per the importer.

Is this the same as Hamilton 151 Demerara? No — that is a separate 750mL bottling. False Idol is its own blend, bottled in 1 litre, created with Anthony Schmidt of the False Idol bar.
