Grand Marnier Cordon Rouge is a 750mL cognac-based orange liqueur bottled at 40% ABV — the original Grand Marnier, created in 1880 by Louis-Alexandre Marnier Lapostolle and still the house's signature red-ribbon bottle. It blends 51% cognac with 49% distilled essence of wild tropical bitter orange (Citrus bigaradia, from the Caribbean, with Haiti named in house sources), a combination no rival had attempted when it scandalised and then conquered Belle Epoque France. It is available to order online at Del Mesa Liquor.

1880: The Blend That Shouldn't Have Worked

The Lapostolle family had distilled fruit liqueurs since 1827; it took Julia Lapostolle's husband, Louis-Alexandre Marnier, to do the unthinkable in 1880 — marry the family's bitter-orange liqueur to cognac, France's most protected spirit, and sell the hybrid under his own name. Cordon Rouge, the red ribbon, was the result: half cognac, half orange essence, richer than any curacao and more aromatic than any brandy serve of its day. It became a fixture of Belle Epoque tables, a Caesar Ritz favourite by house legend, and eventually the orange liqueur serious bartenders reach for when triple sec won't do — the bottle that turns a Margarita into a Cadillac. Campari Group has owned the house since 2016. The full family is on the Grand Marnier vendor page, with the cognacs behind it in our cognac collection.

Tasting Notes

Brand notes describe a bright amber-topaz pour; vanilla from the cognac over candied orange zest on the nose; a full, ample palate with bitter orange in front, balanced by cognac-driven hazelnut and toffee; and a long, harmonious finish.

How to Enjoy

Neat or on the rocks as a digestif — and as the orange liqueur in a Margarita, Sidecar or Old Fashioned when the drink deserves cognac weight behind the citrus. More cocktail-building liqueurs are in our spirits collection.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Grand Marnier and Cointreau?
Base spirit. Grand Marnier Cordon Rouge is built on cognac (51%) blended with bitter orange; Cointreau is a neutral-spirit orange liqueur. Grand Marnier pours amber, richer and warmer; Cointreau is crystal-clear and brighter.

How much cognac is in Grand Marnier Cordon Rouge?
51% — the verified house figure — blended with 49% bitter orange liqueur. The premium cuvees (Louis-Alexandre, Centenaire) raise the cognac share to 82%.

When was Grand Marnier created?
In 1880, by Louis-Alexandre Marnier Lapostolle. The house itself dates to Jean Baptiste Lapostolle's distillery of 1827.

Great experience for me. Living in Prohibition Pennsylvania, Del Mesa was a godsend: successful on-line alcohol purchase in the times of covid!
