Glenfiddich Experimental Series #04 - Fire & Cane Scotch Whisky
Glenfiddich Experimental Series #04 - Fire & Cane Scotch Whisky is Glenfiddich's deliberately unorthodox experiment: a 43% ABV (86 proof), non-age-statement Speyside single malt that marries the distillery's rare peated spirit with its classic unpeated spirit, then finishes the blend in South American rum casks — and it is available to order online at Del Mesa Liquor, San Diego, CA.
"Fire & Cane" names the two unusual ingredients. The fire is Glenfiddich's peated spirit — Malt Master Brian Kinsman first distilled peated whisky in Glenfiddich's own stills in 2003, a rarity for the house — married with the classic sweet Speyside spirit. Both matured in ex-bourbon casks before the blend spent about three months in casks that previously held Latin rum, adding tropical sweetness to the campfire smoke. Released in 2018 as the fourth Experimental Series bottling, it has become one of the distillery's most popular experiments.
Tasting notes (per Glenfiddich): billowing soft peat, campfire smoke, rich sweet toffee, zesty fresh fruit, and gentle spice on the nose; like a Highland peat campfire on the palate, where oak notes and toffee dance with sharp green fruit, sweet baked apple, and soft smoke; a lingering smokiness and sweetness on the finish.
Why buy Fire & Cane? Because it is Glenfiddich's smoky-sweet outlier — the distillery's rarely-seen peated spirit finished in rum casks — a profile far from the house style and one of its most talked-about experiments. Serving note: superb neat; the gentle smoke also lifts a Rob Roy or a smoky highball.
