Three Years of Bourbon Oak, Six Months of Rum
El Mayor is the Gonzalez family's own tequila — four generations of distillers working in partnership with the Lux family of Luxco at their distillery outside Arandas. For this limited edition the family took its extra anejo past the three-year mark in ex-bourbon barrels and gave it a second life in Agricole rum casks, whose grassy, funky rum character lays a tropical sweetness over the bourbon oak's caramel and spice. It is a genuine two-cask tequila, not a flavoured shortcut. Compare it with the core range in our tequila shelves and the extra anejo tequila collection, or visit the El Mayor vendor page.
Tasting Notes
Nose: Caramel, dark chocolate, vanilla and nutmeg with spice (brand notes). Palate: Full-bodied — oak, caramel, dark chocolate and nutmeg in balance. Finish: Smooth, sweet and lingering, ending on cooked agave.
How to Enjoy
Neat, in a wide glass, with time — the rum-cask layer opens slowly. Drinkers who split their shelves between aged tequila and aged rum will find this bottle argues both sides at once.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a rum cask finish on a tequila? After its main ageing — here a minimum of three years in ex-bourbon barrels — the tequila is transferred for a finishing period, here six months, into casks that previously held Agricole rum, picking up that rum's character on top of the oak ageing.
Is it still an extra anejo? Yes — the total age is over three and a half years, past the three-year extra anejo threshold; the rum casks are a finish on top of a fully aged tequila, not a replacement for ageing.
Who makes El Mayor? The Gonzalez family at Destiladora Gonzalez Lux, their distillery outside Arandas, Jalisco, in partnership with Luxco — El Mayor is the family's own brand.
