Connacht Whiskey, Back After a Century
When PJ Rigney built The Shed Distillery on the shores of Lough Allen, its first whiskey cask — filled on the winter solstice, 21 December 2014 — was the first whiskey distilled in the western province of Connacht in over 105 years. The pot still recipe is the classic Irish one, each grain with a job: unmalted barley for spice, depth and that silky pot-still mouthfeel, malted barley for sweetness and body, and a small charge of Barra oats for the signature creaminess. Head distiller Brian Taft's whiskey then rests in first-fill Kentucky bourbon casks and Oloroso sherry casks. Pour it from our Irish whiskey collection, or browse the distillery on the Drumshanbo vendor page.
Tasting Notes
Nose: Rich, warm pot spice with vanilla and dried fruit. Palate: Complex — pot spice, fig, Oloroso sherry richness and toasted oak. Finish: Elegant and creamy, and it lingers.
How to Enjoy
Neat is the honest serve for a pot still whiskey this textured; a few drops of water open the sherry-cask fruit. It also makes a serious, spice-forward Whiskey Sour or Irish Old Fashioned.
Frequently Asked Questions
What makes a whiskey "single pot still"? It is made at one distillery in pot stills from a mix of malted and unmalted barley — a style unique to Ireland. Drumshanbo adds a small amount of Barra oats, an old Irish tradition, for creaminess.
Is this the same as Drumshanbo Gunpowder? No — Gunpowder is the name of The Shed Distillery's gin line. This is its single pot still Irish whiskey, a separate product entirely.
How old is it? The bottle carries no age statement. The US importer's technical sheet describes the whiskey as rested for five years, two beyond the Irish legal minimum.
