Don Alberto Extra Anejo Wine Cask Finish is the house's longest-matured bottling — 40% ABV (80 proof), 750mL, 100% Blue Weber agave distilled at NOM 1477 in Jalisco, Mexico and aged three years in total — two of them in French oak that previously held red wine, then a year in American white oak — deepening it to a dark mahogany with chocolate, cherry and spice. It is available to order online at Del Mesa Liquor.

  • Presentation: Ceramic and glass bottle
  • Origin: NOM 1477, Jalisco, Mexico

Two Years in Wine Oak, One in American Oak

Extra Anejo is tequila's longest legal rest, and Don Alberto gives its flagship the full treatment: Blue Weber agave, cooked and crushed at the NOM 1477 distillery, laid down for two years in French oak that previously held red wine, then finished with a year in American white oak. The wine-cask influence is the point of the bottling — it pulls the profile toward red fruit, dark chocolate and toasted spice rather than the vanilla-forward line of a bourbon-barrel anejo. Compare it with the house's oak-aged bottling in our extra anejo tequila shelf, explore the wider tequila range, or visit the Don Alberto vendor page.

Tasting Notes

Nose: Dark and rich — cherry and dried fruit over oak. Palate: Dark chocolate, toasted spices and cooked agave, with cinnamon and a whisper of tobacco. Finish: Very long and velvety, the wine-cask fruit carrying through.

How to Enjoy

This is a contemplative pour: neat, at room temperature, in a stemmed glass, with time. Adding water or ice flattens the wine-cask fruit that three years built — if you chill it at all, use a single large cube and drink it as it opens.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does "wine cask finish" mean here? Of its three years in oak, this Extra Anejo spends two in French oak barrels that previously held red wine, then a year in American white oak — the wine-seasoned wood is what adds the cherry, chocolate and spice notes that define the bottling.

How old is this Extra Anejo? Three years in total on the programme described by the distillery-feature account — two years in ex-red-wine French oak and one in American white oak — which is also the legal minimum for the Extra Anejo class, tequila's longest standard ageing category.

Is this the same as the Don Alberto Anejo? No. The Anejo (#1 in this batch) is the house's standard oak-aged bottling; this Extra Anejo rests at least three years and is matured in red wine casks, in a ceramic-and-glass presentation bottle.
