A California Classic Since 1944

Chateau Souverain was founded by J. Leland "Lee" Stewart, who bought a winery and some 30 acres on Napa Valley's Howell Mountain in 1943 and harvested his first vintage in 1944 — naming the house for the French word for "sovereign." Winemaking later moved to Alexander Valley, and in 2015 E. & J. Gallo acquired the historic Asti winery and the Souverain brand. Today's Chardonnay is the house's approachable California bottling: single-varietal, full-bodied and fruit-layered. Shop more wine, meet the house on the Chateau Souverain vendor page, or pour it next to another Gallo California white-to-red contrast, J Vineyards California Pinot Noir.
