Cava de Oro Extra Anejo Tequila is a 750mL extra anejo bottled at 40% ABV (80 proof), made from 100% Blue Weber agave by Tequilera Puerta de Hierro in El Arenal, Jalisco, and aged for five years in French white oak barrels — two years beyond the three-year extra anejo minimum. The long French-oak rest, in barrels that previously held red wine, gives it a dark amber colour with reddish hues and the deepest, most composed character in the Cava de Oro house. It is available to order online at Del Mesa Liquor.

Five Years in French Oak: The Top of the Cava de Oro House

Cava de Oro was founded in El Arenal — the gateway town to the Tequila Valley — in the early 1990s, and its house style is defined by French oak: where most tequila rests in ex-bourbon American oak, this house matures in French white oak, much of it previously used for red wine. The Extra Anejo is where that programme runs longest: five full years, drawing cinnamon, caramel and maple depth out of the wood while the agave stays at the centre. Explore the house on the Cava de Oro vendor page, or browse our tequila collection.

Tasting Notes

Per the brand: cinnamon, caramel, vanilla and nutmeg on the nose; smooth and toasted on the palate with cinnamon and maple syrup, finishing long and lingering.

How to Enjoy

Neat in a snifter or on a single large rock, sipped slowly like a fine cognac — five years of French oak deserve an unhurried glass. More long-aged tequilas are in our spirits collection.
