Rioja's Other Grape, in the Spotlight

Campo Viejo, the Logrono house within Pernod Ricard, built its name on Tempranillo — its Garnacha bottling, launched as the winery's first 100% Garnacha wine, gives Rioja's other great red grape the solo billing. Garnacha from Rioja Baja's warmer eastern vineyards ripens into exactly what the producer describes: bright, fruit-first red wine with floral lift and a silky palate. The 2016 carries a Silver / Highly Recommended from the Beverage Testing Institute's tasting. Find it in our red wine range, browse the wider wine shelves, or visit the Bodegas Campo Viejo vendor page.

Tasting Notes

Nose: Red and dark berry fruit — strawberry, raspberry, cherry, blackberry — with floral violet and lilac and a whisper of sweet spice and toast from the oak, per the producer. Palate: Soft, silky and fresh with intense fruit. Finish: Lasting fruit and freshness; the producer's serving guidance is 16–17C.

How to Enjoy

Serve at 16–17C. Campo Viejo's own matches for the Garnacha run to vegetables, beef, lasagna and pasta — or pour it as an appetizer wine, where its bright fruit works chilled a touch further.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Campo Viejo Garnacha 100% Garnacha? Yes — the bottling was launched as the winery's first 100% Garnacha wine, and listings for the 2016 specify 100% Garnacha.

How was the 2016 received? The Beverage Testing Institute (Tastings.com) rated the 2016 Silver / Highly Recommended when tasted in 2018 — the only award verified for this vintage; earlier vintages' medals belong to those vintages.

How long was it aged? Four months in oak after stainless-steel fermentation, per the producer's bottling facts — a short élevage that keeps the Garnacha fruit in front.
