The Helmsman's Dram: Sherried, Salty, Unpeated

Stiùireadair is Scots Gaelic for "helmsman" — the figure on every Bunnahabhain bottle, honoured here in the first place. Against Islay's peated reputation, Bunnahabhain built its name on unpeated whisky, and this expression lets the sherry casks and the sea do the talking: spirit of varying ages from first- and second-fill sherry casks, drawn from warehouses along the Sound of Islay. See the house on the Bunnahabhain vendor page, or browse our scotch whisky collection.

Tasting Notes

Per the brand: dried fruit, creamy caramel, brine, vanilla, and nuts with a touch of spice on the nose; a creamy palate of dried fruit, sea salt, creamy caramel, nuts, and gentle spice; a long, lingering finish of dried fruit.

How to Enjoy

Neat or with a few drops of water — at 46.3% it opens beautifully without ice. More Islay and sherried malts are in our scotch whisky collection.

Bunnahabhain Stiùireadair Scotch Whisky

It is a good scotch with a pleasant taste a slightly sweet after taste. We prefer the 12 year old to the Stiureadair version. It was purchased by mistake when ordering but still enjoying the flavor.

Non-Smokey Bunnahabhain

The Bunnahabhains are typically too smokey for me; however, when I was traveling internationally, I found 3 in travel-retail that are awesome (Eirigh Na Greine, An Cladach, and 14 Pedro Ximenez – if you get a chance at any of these, grab it!). Bunnahabhain recently released the Stiùireadair, but not available in Oklahoma. I picked-up a bottle during a recent trip to Dallas. It is the lowest-cost Bunnahabhain I’ve ever seen, so my expectations were mitigated. The nose is definitely toasted sugar/caramel (per tasting notes). On the tongue, you get full-on cinnamon immediately, followed by the clove. It is an up-front, non-subtle dram… surprisingly good. A good value for the $$ and definitely a worthwhile addition to the selection. Drink slow, drink long, drink a variety, drink often.

Smooth full flavored

Great, was introduced to this scotch by friends that brought some back from Scotland, had never heard of it up to that point. Undoubtedly the smoothest 12 year old scotch I have ever had.
