Bulleit, Straight From the Barrel
Barrel Strength is the Bulleit recipe with the water left out: selected barrels of the same 68/28/4 high-rye bourbon, dumped and combined into a single batch at whatever proof the wood delivered. The batch number appears only on the neck tag — the label carries no fixed proof, because every batch differs; Batch 7, the 2022 release, came in at 120.2 proof. As an expression, Barrel Strength was named Best Straight Bourbon with a Double Gold at the 2018 San Francisco World Spirits Competition. The rest of the house is on the Bulleit vendor page and in our bourbon whiskey collection.
Tasting Notes
Diageo's fact sheet: medium amber, darker than standard Bulleit for want of dilution; gentle spiciness and sweet oak on the nose; smooth maple, oak and nutmeg through the palate; and a long, dry, satiny finish with light toffee and deepened oak.
How to Enjoy
Start neat in a Glencairn, then add water a few drops at a time — at 120.2 proof the bourbon opens in stages, and finding its best dilution is the pleasure of the format. More barrel-proof bourbons are in our whisky collection.
Frequently Asked Questions
What proof is Bulleit Barrel Strength Batch 7?
120.2 proof (60.1% ABV). Barrel Strength proof varies by batch — Diageo states the expression generally runs 120–125 proof — and the batch number is carried on the neck tag rather than the label.
What does "barrel strength" mean here?
The bourbon is bottled uncut and non-chill filtered, with no water added after the selected barrels are dumped — so Batch 7 tastes at the full strength it reached in the barrel.
How old is Bulleit Barrel Strength?
It carries no age statement. Barrel-age figures in secondary sources conflict, so no age is claimed here; the verified facts are the mash, the #4 char and the batch proof.
