An Ensamble Built for the Glass and the Shaker
Bruxo — from "brujo," the shaman or wise one — was created by a group of friends to bottle the mezcal of Oaxaca's palenques, and the X (the letter pronounced through "Oaxaca" and "Mexico" themselves) is the range's blending exercise: Espadin for the classic roasted-agave core, wild Barril for structure and a greener, more mineral edge, married after distillation rather than in the oven. Maestro Juan Morales Garcia works the traditional way in San Dionisio Ocotepec — a conical horno fired for days, a horse-drawn tahona stone, open natural fermentation and two passes through copper pot stills. Explore the village's other bottling on our mezcal shelves, browse the wider agave range in tequila, or see the house on the Bruxo vendor page.
Tasting Notes
Nose: Delicate citrus and flowers, with peanut and jicama (producer notes). Palate: Citrus peel and fruit over dried chamomile, light minerality and a touch of honey. Finish: Dry and warming, with a subtle charred edge.
How to Enjoy
X is the Bruxo built to mix — it holds a Mezcal Margarita or a Paloma twist together without disappearing — but the Barril component rewards a neat pour too. Bruxo's own copy warns that each lot varies slightly; check the bottle for its lot details.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is an ensamble mezcal? A blend of mezcals from more than one agave variety. In Bruxo X the blend is made after distillation: 80% Espadin mezcal married with 20% Barril mezcal.
How is Bruxo X different from Bruxo No.1? No.1 is 100% Espadin at a higher strength, made by a different maestro (Lucio Morales Lopez) in the same village; X is the two-agave ensamble by Juan Morales Garcia, positioned for mixing as well as sipping.
Is Bruxo X aged? No — it is a joven, bottled unaged after distillation, so the oven smoke and agave character stay front and centre.
