The First Bruxo, From a Village of Maestros
No.1 is where the Bruxo range starts: a single-agave Espadin from San Dionisio Ocotepec, a mezcal village in Oaxaca's Central Valleys at roughly 1,788 metres, made by Lucio Morales Lopez with the full traditional toolkit — maguey roasted for days in a conical earthen oven over pine and oak, crushed under a tahona stone, fermented in wood and run twice through a copper pot still. Nothing is aged and nothing is blended away; this is the house's reference Espadin, and the numbered range (Barril, ensambles, a Tobala) builds outward from it. Compare it with its two-agave sibling on our mezcal shelf, or browse the full range on the Bruxo vendor page.
Tasting Notes
Nose: Light floral smoke over cooked agave, with charcoal and black pepper in the earthier pours. Palate: Citrus-forward and dry, roasted agave and peppery spice, a faint white-grape freshness underneath. Finish: Smoky and clean, pepper and charcoal carrying off.
How to Enjoy
Sip it neat from a copita or jicara, where the oven smoke and Espadin fruit stay in balance; it is the classic sipping expression of the range. A pinch of sal de gusano and an orange slice is the traditional accompaniment.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does "No.1" mean in the Bruxo range? It is the first and foundational expression: 100% Espadin, single maestro, single village. The numbers that follow explore other agaves and blends — No.3 is Barril, No.5 is Tobala.
Who makes Bruxo No.1? Maestro mezcalero Lucio Morales Lopez of San Dionisio Ocotepec, Oaxaca — a different producer from Bruxo X, which is made in the same village by Juan Morales Garcia.
Is it smoky? Yes, in the traditional measure: the agave is roasted in an earthen oven over wood, so expect genuine oven smoke woven through cooked agave, citrus and pepper — not a peated, medicinal smoke.
