The House's First Premium Rum
Brugal was founded in Puerto Plata in 1888 by Don Andres Brugal Montaner, and only family members can become its Maestros Roneros. Extra Viejo arrived in 1976 from the third generation of Maestros as the house's signature premium expression — every drop cask-aged, and drier than most aged rums because Brugal distils much of the heaviness out before the casks do their work. Per the brand's copy: a bright, deep amber rum with wood, dried fruits, almonds, cocoa, vanilla, orange peel, caramel, and molasses on the nose; vanilla, caramel, and honey first on the palate, then sweet spices and rich cocoa with rounded woody spice; a lingering, peppery finish.
