Broken Barrel Single Oak Isle of Peat is a 110 proof (55% ABV), 750mL American whiskey — a blend of Indiana wheat whiskey (54.5%) and Indiana single malt whiskey (45.5%), each aged at least one year, finished with a single oak: charred staves reclaimed from Islay Scotch barrels. It is the peated entry in Broken Barrel's Single Oak Series, where founder Seth Benhaim's Oak Bill concept — the bill of broken barrel staves printed beside the mash bill on every bottle — narrows to one stave type. The Islay staves rest in the blended whiskey for a minimum of 30 days in a warm, dry environment, drawing out the smoke. Production was 6,600 bottles. It is available to order online at Del Mesa Liquor.

Islay Smoke, Delivered by Stave Instead of Barrel

Broken Barrel's founding heresy is that a whiskey's wood story does not have to end at the barrel: after traditional ageing, the whiskey is batched in tanks and finished with broken barrel staves submerged directly in the spirit, so both faces of the wood work on the liquid. The Single Oak Series takes one stave type at a time — here, charred oak from barrels that held peated Islay Scotch. The base is deliberately mellow (wheat whiskey and single malt, no corn or rye), giving the peat smoke a soft, sweet stage. Brand copy records a Double Gold at the 2019 San Francisco World Spirits Competition for the result. Tasting Notes

Nose: Wheat, smoke, peat and oak (brand notes). Palate: Campfire, charred spices and roasted nuts over a golden-honey body. Finish: Nutmeg, dark fruit and clove.

How to Enjoy

Neat or with a few drops of water to open the smoke. Fans of peated Scotch crossing into American whiskey — and wheat-whiskey drinkers curious about peat — are the audience; it also stands up in a smoky Old Fashioned.
