Bosscal Joven Mezcal is a 42% ABV (84 proof), 750mL unaged mezcal from the highlands of Durango, Mexico, made from 100% wild-grown Cenizo agave (Agave durangensis) under NOM D248G. Per the brand's own releases, the wild agave is hand-harvested, carried down by donkey in Bosscal's "Mountain to Market" process, slow-cooked with volcanic rock in earthen pit ovens, ground by hand with axes, fermented in oak vats and double distilled in stainless steel. It is available to order online at Del Mesa Liquor.

Durango's Wild-Cenizo Answer to Oaxaca

Most mezcal drinkers start in Oaxaca; Bosscal is the case for the north. Fourth-generation mezcalero Uriel Simental Enriquez hand-selects wild Cenizo growing in Durango's highlands, and for every mature plant harvested the brand plants a new pup — a sustainability practice built into its Mountain to Market name. The Joven took Gold at the 2021 San Francisco World Spirits Competition, per the brand's importer announcement. Taste the Durango difference in our mezcal range, browse the wider tequila collection, or visit the Bosscal vendor page. (Bosscal's rabbit-distilled Pechuga de Conejo is a separate expression — this Joven is the pure wild-Cenizo spirit.)

Tasting Notes

Nose: Herbal first, with flowers and minerals opening into tropical fruit — tart and sweet at once, like passion fruit, per the brand's distributor notes. Palate: Light smoke, very crisp; citrus, particularly orange and blood orange, with sweet, tart and floral notes in balance. Finish: Clean, with the nose's tartness carrying through.

How to Enjoy

Sip it neat in a copita to follow the wild Cenizo's herbal-mineral line, with orange slices and sal de gusano alongside if you like. Its crisp citrus also makes it the mezcal for a Mezgarita — the brand's own signature serve.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Cenizo agave? Agave durangensis — the wild agave of Durango's highlands. Bosscal uses only wild-grown Cenizo, hand-harvested and replanted pup-for-pup.

Is Bosscal Joven aged? No — joven means unaged. It goes from its double distillation to bottle without barrel time, keeping the agave character direct.

Is this the Bosscal with the rabbit? No — that is Pechuga de Conejo, a separate Bosscal expression given a third distillation. The Joven is double distilled, with no rabbit and no apples.
