An All-Red Estate in Shiraz Country

Barossa Valley Estate, at Marananga in the western Barossa, has made wine since 1985 and works a reds-only core range — Shiraz, GSM and this Cabernet Sauvignon. The 2014 season brought plentiful winter and early-spring rain, a cool flowering that moderated yields, then dry, warm weather and a cooler spell before harvest that produced small-berried bunches with intense flavour, fresh acidity and firm tannin. The estate was acquired by New Zealand's Delegat Group in 2013. Tasting Notes

Nose: Blackcurrant with cedary tobacco, black olive and spice; the International Wine Challenge's 2014 note adds crunchy bramble fruit with a hint of eucalyptus. Palate: Full-bodied and ripe, with blackcurrant and tobacco over firmish tannins. Finish: Long and savoury, the cedar and spice carrying through.

How to Enjoy

Decant briefly and serve with grilled, braised or slow-cooked meats, roast lamb, or dishes in creamy, buttery sauces — the wine's tannin and dark fruit are built for rich food. As a 2014, it is in its drinking window now.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Barossa Valley known for Cabernet Sauvignon? Shiraz is the region's flagship, but Barossa Cabernet is a recognised style in its own right — powerful, dark-fruited and full-bodied — and this estate's core range is reds only.

Can the 2014 still be cellared? Release-era guidance suggested four to five years of cellaring from release; the 2014 is now a mature wine, so it is best enjoyed now rather than laid down further.

How was the 2014 made? Blocks were vinified separately with up to seven days of controlled-temperature fermentation, malolactic fermentation after racking, and 12 months in French oak.
