The Whirlpool in a Bottle

Corryvreckan is Ardbeg at full force: the new French oak injects pepper, hickory and dark-fruit density into Islay smoke at a proof that demands respect — and rewards it. This is the bottle Committee members hoarded before it went core, and it remains the heaviest hitter in the distillery's permanent lineup. Tasting Notes

Per Ardbeg's official notes: the nose opens with tarry ropes, creosote, linseed oil and waxy dark chocolate, warm blackcurrants, muscovado sugar and earthy pine needles; water reveals brine, crisp seaweed, smoky bacon, vanilla and cloves. The palate is deep, peppery and chewy — peppered steak, black tarry espresso, melted dark fruits, bitter almond, star anise and hickory. A long, powerful finish of tarry coffee, chocolate-covered cherries, hot pepper sauce, treacle and menthol-chilli heat.

How to Enjoy

At 114.2 proof, water is not optional — add it gradually until the dark fruits and chocolate bloom (most drinkers land around 100 proof). A big, contemplative dram; not a beginner's Islay.
