An Estate Arak from the Batroun Hills

Batroun Mountains is a first-generation family winery, founded in 2003 by Assaad Hark — a UC Davis graduate, like assistant winemaker Hala — and run today with his wife Katy and their six children across growing, production, bottling and marketing. The estate farms about 11 hectares of dry-farmed vines in the Batroun district at elevations running from roughly 450 to 1,500 metres, certified organic by CCPB to EU standards, and produces around 50,000 bottles a year across its range. Alongside its wines, the winery distils two araks; Arak 7 is the estate's classic expression, triple-distilled in-house from grape spirit with fresh natural aniseed. See the winery's other bottling on the Batroun Mountains vendor page and more Levantine spirits in our spirits collection.

Tasting Notes

The producer publishes no formal tasting sheet for Arak 7; its own description of the arak is of fresh, clean, complex aromas and a rich, smooth taste — the aniseed character carried on a clean grape-spirit base, turning milky white as water is added, as arak traditionally does.

How to Enjoy

The producer's serve: dilute one part arak to two parts water (one and a half parts water for a stronger pour), then add ice — always water before ice, so the spirit louches to its signature milky white. Serve alongside mezze. More anise spirits and Lebanese bottlings are in our spirits collection and our liqueurs collection.
